Ross Glasgow, an Assistive Technology (AT) trainer, helps disabled and neurodivergent students overcome academic challenges and build confidence in using assistive technology.
In a recent interview, Ross shared his insights on the learning barriers these students face and how Jamworks is transforming their note taking experience. He believes,
“The AI in Jamworks is really powerful for disabled students.”
The challenge
For many disabled students, keeping up with the fast pace of lectures and taking notes is a significant challenge. Whether typing or handwriting, students often struggle to capture all the information while also listening and processing the content in real time.
“Students who try to type or handwrite notes often struggle to keep up because the lecturer is speaking too quickly,” Ross shared.
“If they’re focusing on writing, they can’t listen effectively, which means they miss key information. There’s definitely a lack of concentration—especially during long lectures, like those lasting an hour or two. Students tend to drift off and lose focus, which makes it even harder to stay engaged.”
This constant battle to take accurate notes while absorbing lecture content often leaves students feeling overwhelmed, making it harder for them to engage fully with and retain the material.
How Jamworks helps disabled students overcome note taking challenges
Ross highlighted several Jamworks features that directly address these note taking difficulties. One important feature is Automatic Highlights, which simplifies the note taking process by allowing students to mark important sections of a lecture with just one click.
“If they don’t want to type, they can just click on that highlight button. It’s easier, isn’t it, than typing?” Ross explained.
This reduces the cognitive load of trying to write everything down, allowing students to stay engaged with the lecture content.
“They don’t have to listen back to a whole segment—they can just quickly go back to that specific highlight to save time,” he added.
The productivity boost comes from not having to revisit the entire lecture to find the sections they want to focus on. By marking important parts during the lecture, students can easily return to these highlights later, saving time and ensuring better focus on the material.
Another standout feature is Ask JamAI, which Ross described as “really cool.” This feature allows students to ask specific questions about their recordings and receive instant, accurate answers.
“For example, if they didn’t know the meaning of something, they could just ask that question, and it will find it straight away for you,” Ross explained.
Ross also highlighted the value of Ask JamAI for students who take longer to process information:
“I think it’s definitely saving time for people that, you know, it takes a long time for people to process information. You know, just ask a question and finding out the answer straight away as opposed to, you know, it might take people, like, an hour to try and find a specific point.”
Lastly, Ross praised the Screen Recording feature, which allows students to capture entire lectures or online meetings. “The ability to record the screen is quite nice as well,” Ross noted.
How Jamworks supports ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia & Hearing Loss
Ross emphasised that Jamworks is especially beneficial for students with ADHD and anxiety, as these conditions can significantly impact concentration. Missing important information during a lecture can be particularly frustrating for students who already struggle to stay focused.
“So, anxiety, definitely. ADHD, definitely in terms of concentration,” Ross shared.
He also highlighted the value of Ask JamAI, saying, “And also the ability to ask questions through the Ask JamAI feature.”
This feature helps students stay engaged in the lecture because, even if they miss something, they know they can ask Ask JamAI later, providing peace of mind and preventing them from falling behind.
Ross also highlighted the importance of Transcripts for students who are hard of hearing or those who benefit from visual aids.
“Definitely people who have hearing loss or are potentially deaf. The transcript is really good, especially for people who need it—like those who are hard of hearing,” he said.
For students with dyslexia, Ross emphasized how Jamworks helps by offering an efficient way to engage with content without the pressure of perfect typing.
“Jamworks is really helpful for people with dyslexia, especially for those who are not the fastest typers or who type incorrectly. The transcript’s gonna be really helpful for them.”
Ross also noted that Jamworks’ transcripts are very accurate.
“The transcription accuracy is one of the best on the market.”
The impact
Ross, who describes himself as “quite a techy person,” is highly impressed by the AI in Jamworks. He believes it has the potential to be transformative, explaining,
“AI is really, really powerful but has its shortcomings. What I like about Jamworks is that AI cannot be used in a negative way.”
He further added, “You can’t really cheat on your essay. You can’t ask it to write your essay for you.”
He emphasised that the AI in Jamworks helps students by supporting their learning and streamlining tasks, rather than doing the work for them.
Ross also praised how Jamworks helps students save time by generating personalised study materials. Instead of spending hours revisiting lengthy lectures, students can focus on revising AI-generated notes.
“The AI features are extremely helpful because they don’t have to watch the whole thing again. They can just go back to little snippets. Definitely going to save time,” he said.
Overall, Ross believes that Jamworks’ features—designed with accessibility, flexibility, and efficiency in mind—are transforming how students learn, making them more organised, confident, and successful in their academic journey.
